Character Name: Gil Arroyo

Age: 60 now

Canon: Prodigal Son

Canon point: End of S2

History: Season One Info

In Season 2, he recovers from being stabbed. His burgeoning romance with Jessica Whitly ends after she overhears part of an out-of-context conversation, in spite of his attempts to reassure her. He comes back to work at Major Crimes, throwing himself into the job and keeping his distance from Jessica in the immediate aftermath of her rejection.

His concern for Malcolm grows throughout the season as the younger man's behavior becomes ever more reckless and erratic. After Malcolm loses someone in the field, Gil tries to convince him to take some time off, but Malcolm convinces Gil to let him work.

With Malcolm's assistance (or, y'know, interference, but shhh), Gil and Jessica reconnect, renewing their relationship shortly before Malcolm's father, Martin, escapes the psychiatric institution where he's being held. Gil and Major Crimes partner with the Marshals Service to hunt him down, relying on Malcolm's instincts to track Martin. When the trail Malcolm follows seems to be a feint, seemingly letting Martin escape properly, the Marshals take over the case.

As the hunt for Martin intensifies, Gil tries to pull back on Malcolm's figurative reins, letting the Marshals do their job in spite of knowing full well that Martin would probably get killed during apprehension. He admits to Jessica that he hopes Martin does die, but still runs down a lead that Malcolm turns up without informing him. When Malcolm goes rogue, Gil is forced to admit that Malcolm is right--Martin was kidnapped. Unfortunately, it's too late. Martin's kidnapper almost kills Malcolm, and Martin saves his life, before drugging Malcolm and taking him with when he escapes their kidnapper and goes on the run.

At Gil's canonpoint, he's partnered with the Marshals again to find Malcolm and Martin. While his subordinates engage in the manhunt, he schemes with Jessica to get proof that Martin was kidnapped and that Malcolm didn't run with him willingly. They manage to prove Malcolm's innocence, just before his team in the field finds Malcolm's general area. He's stuck in the office waiting for an update as of the end of the season.

Re-app additional info: He vanished in April of last year, having arrived in the summer of 2021. A series of Horrifying Traumas ensued after arrival, including his attempts to forge local connections/sources and the resulting deaths and disappearances of a number of Gloucester residents. He disconnected from that attempt somewhat after that, struggling to deal with a sense of impotence and confusion in the face of everything happening, and was still grappling with the whole demolition of his worldview and usual way of doing things when he vanished.

Personality:
Sharp/Monofocused (can be negative) - He's sharp in multiple senses of the word. Keenly intelligent, he's highly respected in his position as the head of Major Crimes, and seems to have pull with some of the more significant members of New York's law enforcement leadership. He also doesn't mince words, and not always in the kindest of ways, particularly with possible suspects. His monofocus comes into play when he gets a particular idea or plan in his head and won't let it go. A particular "mission" if you will. He was a steady and loving presence in Malcolm's life growing up, but was so involved in helping coach Malcolm through his trauma that he never pair any real attention to Malcolm's sister, only realizing how much she needed a father figure too after discovering that she'd been visiting the Surgeon in secret.

Stubborn (negative) - While he's driven and tenacious, that sometimes spills over into simple pig-headed stubbornness, where he'll refuse to see someone else's point of view regardless of the evidence presented. For example, when Malcolm insisted his father had been kidnapped, Gil refused to entertain or encourage the idea, even while running a background check on the supposed kidnapper. He didn't tell Malcolm about the research into the possible kidnapper until he had evidence to suggest she was innocent.

Loyal - Once you're in Gil's circle, he'll fight tooth and nail to protect you. After Malcolm turned his father in to the police at age ten, having simultaneously saved Gil's life, Gil took Malcolm under his wing and stayed by his side and his mother's for twenty years. When one of his detectives, a black man, is assaulted by a white police officer, he supports that detective without question, up to and including going with him to mediation sessions. Another detective views him as family, having come up through the police force under his mentorship. During the events of the second season, he goes as far as to tell the Marshals that he would stake his career on Malcolm's innocence, just so he can buy Malcolm time to escape Martin somehow.

Kind - He's... just a really nice dude. He has a high level of compassion for the victims and survivors of violent crimes, maintaining his love for and protectiveness of people in spite of 40 years or so on the job. When he sees someone in pain, he does his best to comfort them. When he sees a kid in need (up to and including one of his detectives, who's 44 but still totally his 'kid') he'll do anything he can to help. He's a soft touch, a romantic, and a bleeding heart, who can't help taking in strays, troubled kids, and troublemakers.

Frank - Sometimes to a fault. He's very up front about emotional matters, at least when he trusts someone--or when he's trying to emotionally connect to them either to encourage witnesses through interrogations or to get a wayward kid (or adult) to realize there's someone out there who can relate or wants to try. At one point he very openly tells Jessica, Malcolm's mother, that he hopes sometimes that Martin will die somehow and free her from his shadow. He does it to comfort her when she's struggling with the idea of Martin's death herself, to tell her that emotions are just that--feelings that come and go, and it's what you do with them that counts.

Suitability: As mentioned above, he's very kind and has a soft spot for young people and those in crisis. The very fact that so many kids and twentysomethings got pulled into this mess will be enough to keep him present and trying to protect them. Additionally, he'll want to find out as much as he can about the ADI, their motives, their actions, and what they might have had to do with bringing people here. He doesn't want to go haring off and build a new life. He wants to get his old one back. Re-app addition: Given his nearly year-long absence, he's going to be that much more determined to take care of the people he knows who are still present and to throw himself headlong into whatever work ADI can provide in the service of getting himself and his loved ones home safe. He's not going anywhere, particularly not when Gloucester is such a chaotic hotspot for disaster.

Powers/Abilities: REGULAR SQUISHY HUMAN who's in really good shape for a 59 year old. He's an excellent marksman with a handgun, but he wouldn't call himself a sharpshooter. He thinks fast, has excellent instincts, is pretty good at reading people, and can improvise well in a crisis.

Entity Affinity:
The Desolation - He loves people. He values his relationships above most things, and in particular he encourages the young to live up to their potential and work toward their futures. He absolutely fears losing the people he's closest to, and given that many of those people are mentees of one kind or another, the destruction of potential and possible futures is devastating to him.

Inventory: A turtleneck and blazer, slacks, wallet and its basic contents, badge, smartphone, and a standard-issue Glock 17 with a full magazine and holster. Re-app update: There is no update. It's the same. It's exactly the same.

Samples: Primarily Dialogue- a network post from his previous stay, but I can create something new if necessary

Introspection-heavy
